Man shot, killed in Marshall County, MS
MARSHALL COUNTY, MS (WMC) - A man was shot and killed Sunday morning at a Marathon gas station in Byhalia, Mississippi.
Authorities identified the victim as 27-year-old Atha Falkner.
Family and friends of Falkner, also known as Duke, are desperate for answers.
Some of those family members told WMC they arrived here on the scene shortly after Duke was shot, and they believe more could have been done to save his life.
His mother, Theresa Falkner, will never forget the final moments of her son’s life.
"I actually even asked God to take my life for him to be able to live a little longer. Since I've been here a little longer and he got children. I just wanted him to wake up," said Falkner.
The Marshall County Sheriff's Office is releasing little details about their on-going investigation. They said Falkner was shot around 1 o'clock.
On Facebook, Falkner’s page is filled with photos of him and his two children.
Sunday, family posted video after video of Falkner and his kids.
Trevez Marion, Falkner’s cousin, said he loved his kids.
"That's all he talked about taking care of his kids, going for the kids. His son just like him," said Marion.
Several family members said as Falkner laid on the ground dying, paramedics did not attend to him.
Falkner's mother said it was like they didn't care
"They didn't try. If they say they tried, they didn't try. They didn't do their job at all," said Marion.
According to the Marshall County Coroner, a private ambulance company called Carmed EMS responded to the scene.
When I called their headquarters in Oxford Sunday they told me to call back on Monday.
For the Falkner family, this Christmas won't be the same without Duke.
"It ain't going to be the same, period. We're going to miss him. We're going to miss him," said Marion.
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office said a substantial reward is being offered for anyone with information leading to an arrest.
