2 women in custody after deadly high-speed chase, crashes in Mississippi
MARSHALL COUNTY, MS (WMC) - One person is dead and a law enforcement officer is injured after a high-speed chase and two crashes in Mississippi.
Investigators have taken two women into custody after the multi-county chase that started in DeSoto County.
According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol, the chase started around 1 p.m. in DeSoto County where deputies were pursuing Taeona Edmonson, of Cape Coral, Florida.They ended their chase once it crossed over into Marshall County, but Edmonson continued speeding until she caused a crash, killing Lisa Gay, of Batesville, Mississippi.
According to MHP, Edmonson got into another vehicle driven by Tanairy Portal, of Miami, Florida, that was traveling behind her. Edmonson, now driving the second vehicle, continued east on Highway 78 into Union County where deputies tried to stop the car, but it crossed over into oncoming traffic, hitting an MHP officer’s vehicle head on.
The trooper and both suspects went to the hospital with minor injuries.
MHP says Edmonson and Portal will likely faces charges in multiple counties as a result of the chase and crashes.
Eastbound Highway 78 was shut down for more than four hours while investigators cleared the scene. All lanes were reopened around 5:30 p.m.
