MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - A Memphis grandmother was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking and now Memphis police are looking for the men who were responsible.

A husband, children and grandchildren spent Thanksgiving Day without their wife, mother, and grandmother.

Belinda Humphreys was shot and killed during an attempted carjacking.

"I just heard about 10 or 12 shots,” said Ray Charles Tate.

Tate said he was walking in the neighborhood when he heard the shots.

"I just turned around and went the other way,” Tate said.

One woman did not want to be identified out of fear also heard the shots Monday night.

"I heard about 3 gunshots and then all of a sudden a big barrage of gunfire,” she said.

Memphis police say it was an attempted carjacking at Truman and Ozan. Larry and his wife Belinda were in their car, not even a block from their home.

Larry said he and his wife were stopped at this intersection when some armed men came up and tried to pull the car door open, but the door was locked, so the men started shooting. Belinda was hit twice and died.

Larry said he was able to shoot back but he was also hit, although not seriously injured.

Jose Hernandez spoke through an interpreter and shared that he saw the getaway car.

"He said the car was driving fast,” Hernandez said.

Some of the bullets went through one woman’s front door.

"It’s pretty scary,” she said.

Even scarier was that woman found a bullet casing in the grate near her house. She plans to call police.

People who live here say the neighborhood has changed.

"It’s happening more and more that there’s things happening,” the woman said.

“I’ve been here over 30 years,” Tate said. “It’s getting worser and worser over here.”

Belinda, a retired road truck driver, has three children and 9 grandchildren.

The Humphreys family did not have life insurance or funeral funds, so there is a GoFundMe page for Belinda Kay Humphreys.
