MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - The family of 25-year-old Martavious Banks, the man injured in an officer-involved shooting last month, said Banks appears to be doing better.

A news conference with attorneys and Martavious’ mother Janice Banks on Thursday was very brief, lasting about two minutes.

In spite of its brevity, the conference did provide significant updates on Martavious’ condition.

Baltimore attorney Billy Murphy walked out holding hands with Janice Banks.

Murphy said that Martavious is “doing well,” and is able to talk and articulate what he remembers.

Martavious said he was shot twice in the back as he was going into a home, according to Murphy.

Three Memphis police officers are now off-duty after investigation revealed all three turned off their body cameras prior to the shooting.

MPD is conducting an internal investigation and the TBI is leading the investigation on the shooting itself.

Murphy is a civil rights attorney who is well-known nationally.

He recently secured a $6.4 million settlement from the city of Baltimore Maryland after Freddie Gray died in police custody in 2015. Six officers involved in the incident were charged, three were acquitted, and the cases against the other three dropped.

WMC5 has reached out to MPD for comment.
